BEACONS

'Beacons' is the latest EP from Catch92, continuing the sonic direction established on his album Singularity while pushing it into a more focused and cohesive space.

Across five tracks, Beacons follows a loose journey from Peace to War, gradually shifting from chilled, hip hop inspired beats into darker, heavier and more vocal driven territory. Where Singularity explored a transition between styles and introduced a more electronic palette, 'Beacons' feels like the point where that new direction fully settles into place.

The EP opens with 'Peace', a laid back, forward thinking beat driven track with light vocals and a heavier breakdown hinting at what is to come. From there, 'Footings' introduces the first signs of tension, moving from calm beginnings into a progressively unsettled rhythm. 'Rise' pushes further into darker, bass heavy territory, while 'Beacons' itself sits at the point of ignition, its distorted instrumentation acting as both warning and signal.

The journey reaches its most abrasive point with 'War Paint'. Dominant, repetitive vocals drive the track like a war chant, creating a stark contrast with the nonchalant feel of 'Peace'. The track also marks Catch92's return to recording his own vocals after several years away from using his voice in his music. The phrase that became the track's central vocal came from a single line that appeared in his head while listening back to the track: “War Paint is a Red Stripe, warm from midnight.”

That line became the loose catalyst for the EP's wider theme, drawing on memories of rave culture and warm cans of Red Stripe pulled from the back shelves of club basements, while taking on an unintended resonance against the backdrop of a world increasingly defined by conflict and uncertainty.

'Beacons' is, in many ways, an extension of 'Singularity'. Some of the tracks were created around the same period and through similar methods, but the result is more streamlined: a consistent, clean cut sound that cements Catch92's evolving electronic direction while delivering some of his most forceful and exciting material to date.

"The theme for the EP unravelled in a few ways, however I came up with the bar "War Paint is a Red Stripe, warm from midnight" in homage to my rave days of red stripes from a back shelf and no fridge in club basements. This sparked the loose theme of going from peace to war. It also seemed quite a poignant theme in the world at that moment too. So through the tracks we progress from Peace time; a change in Footings; the rise of people; lighting the beacons to singal war; and putting on the war paint as we do battle" - Catch92
